Our choir
BulCanto Choir Berlin is a vibrant, mixed Orthodox choir of passionate singers from all over the world, united by a love for both Orthodox and traditional Bulgarian music. Founded over 20 years ago, we have been performing on stage for nearly two decades, led by the talented Boryana Velichkova, who has guided us with dedication and vision throughout the years.
Our repertoire is a captivating blend of Orthodox music and Bulgarian folklore, with pieces ranging from the sacred to the profane. With both traditional and modern arrangements, we bring these rich musical traditions to life in unique ways.
In 2024, we celebrated our 20th anniversary under the motto “Levitation – Bulgarische Folklore durch Raum und Zeit”, with a grand concert at the Chamber Music Hall of the Berlin Philharmonie, inviting audiences to experience an auditory journey through space and time. Come join us and experience the beauty of Bulgarian music in a new light!
Boryana Velichkova

Boryana Velichkova is а musician and teacher with an authentic instinct for balance and dynamic of the choral music. Classically trained, she teaches piano and lyrical singing in several music high schools. Her love for traditional music from her homeland inspired her to develop her own ambitious projects celebrating Bulgarian vocal culture. Since 2004 she has started and successfully led three Berlin-based choirs, each with its distinct artistic direction and character – a children’s choir for traditional music, a mixed orthodox choir, and the typically all-female ensemble for Bulgarian singing, BVB. Passionate about different styles and developing a signature sound, Boryana works on arranging the music for all three choirs, and collaborates with renowned Bulgarian composers and performers. The conductor inspires her singers with enormous interpretive contrasts to present a color palette from full-out soloist singing to the most intimate and elegant of sounds of choir music.
